A Freetrader (short: FT) is a career which strengths lie in trading and sailing they can also boost the effectiveness of a fleet with their group buff skills.
Privateers are pirates with loyalty to one of the nations. As such they have some similarities to the Pirate career but differ in some vital aspects. For instance they can not capture or scavenge for free ships. Their letter of marque states they have to send captured ships to their nation and instead get a reward equal to the Freetraders or the Navy Officers.
Naval Officers are the primary defenders of the nation. As such they have access to various ships and armament that are not available to Freetraders and Privateers. Naval Officers can sail 1,2,3 rate ships of the line.
Cutthroat is one of two career choices for players that belong to the Pirate nation. They have the ability to Scavenge or Take Command of ships. Other nations can not capture ships. They can chose Privateer which has many similarities to the Cutthroat career.
Buccaneer is one of two career choices for players that belong to the Pirate nation. They gain the ability to Scavenge for free ships, but cannot Take Command of ships. Other nations can not get free ships.. They can choose Freetrader which has many similarities to the Buccaneer career.
